Catalog of Georgian Historic Monuments

“Catalog of Cultural Monument's of Georgian Historic Parts Tao-Klarjeti and Kola-Artani, Located in Turkey”

Project Objectives:

The project objective was to obtain maximum possible information about Georgian historic monuments and architectural remains from the historic sites of Tao-Klarjeti and Kola-Artani, historically parts of Samtskhe and Javakheti, and explore villages and their surrounding areas currently located in Turkey.  The project aimed to determine the precise location (GPS coordinates) and examine the current state of the monuments, produce imagery, provide detailed description and take  measurements. The information gathered was processed and converted into complete online and printed catalogues.

Project Activities and Outcomes:

During the project, more than 20 scientific expeditions were carried out in historic Tao-Klarjeti. The expeditions explored approximately 700 unknown cultural monuments with no inscriptions on them, among which were monasteries, churches, castles and towers, megalithic constructions, lapidary manuscripts and other artifacts.

The scientific surveys are presented in the expeditions’ reports of historic Tao-Klarjeti in  2014 and 2015. In 2017, four volumes of Tao-Klarjeti’s cultural monuments were published presenting approximately 1200 Georgian cultural monuments with relevant notes, coordinates (GPS) and photographs.
