In 2026, Georgia will mark 1,700 years since the declaration of Christianity as the state religion - a milestone that represents one of the most significant stages in the spiritual, historical, and cultural identity of the Georgian people. This anniversary once again highlights the exceptional role of Christianity in the process of state formation and development of Georgia.
The Orthodox Church of Georgia, with its centuries-long history, holds a central place in the country’s social and spiritual life. Throughout different historical periods, Catholicos-Patriarchs have made a significant contribution to the spread and consolidation of Christianity, as well as to the preservation of national identity, among whom Ilia II stands out as a great spiritual leader and peacemaker.
Within the framework of this commemorative date, a lecture was held, delivered by Prof. Sergo Vardosanidze - a researcher of the history of the Georgian Church, Doctor of Historical Sciences, and Doctor of Theology. During the meeting, he spoke about important aspects of the life and work of Ilia II, his spiritual legacy, and his outstanding role in the development of the Georgian Church and society.
The lecture attracted significant interest from the audience and was followed by an engaging discussion.
