Public Lecture - “The Theatre of the Absurd from Beckett to Fosse: A Historical Reconsideration”

28 March 2025

On March 28 at 13:00, the Caucasus University Conference Hall will host a public lecture and discussion on “Theatre of the Absurd, from Samuel Beckett to Jon Fosse” featuring Dr. Octavian Saiu, a Romanian theater researcher and specialist in international cultural relations. The event is organized by the CU “International Research Center for the Study of Georgia”.

The Theatre of the Absurd emerged from a historical context of destruction and despair following the horrific catastrophe of World War II. The revelation of inhumanity shaped a social landscape in which existential themes intertwined with avant-garde artistic expression. The extreme ambiguity of today’s global landscape makes the problem of the absurd as acutely apparent as it was when Beckett and Ionesco made their radical statement. The theatre of the absurd is compelling evidence that the absurd is not an outdated concept, but rather a universal category that we still have to grapple with. The lecture will examine the theatre of the absurd as a cultural phenomenon that remains relevant both intellectually and deeply spiritually.
