Two Iberias - Two Gates of Europe

From 10 to 12 September 2026, the Complutense University of Madrid and the San Dámaso Ecclesiastical University (Madrid) in cooperation with Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University and Caucasus University, will host the Second International Conference “Two Iberias – Two Gates of Europe.”

 

After the success of the I International Conference“Two Iberias – Two Gates of Europe.” (Tbilisi State University & Caucasus University, June 12-14, Tbilisi 2024) this is a second joint endeavor of these universities aiming at establishing a stable Spanish-Georgian cooperation on these research areas.

 

This conference is dedicated to the study of the ancient cultures of Caucasian Iberia and Spanish Iberia and their medieval reception, including parallels and presumed contacts.

 

The conference will bring together Georgian and foreign professors and experts in the field, young scientists and doctoral students and will be organized around several thematic areas:

 

1- Eastern Iberia as the Gateway of Europe: myth and history

2-Western Iberia as the Gateway of Europe: myth and history

3- Two Iberias - a link through the ages?

4- The Two Iberias under Byzantine rule

5- The Two Iberias under Islamic rule

6- Palaeo-Iberian languages (Eastern and Western)

7- Georgian and Spanish Literatures: relations and translation

8- Particular development of Christianism in the Two Iberias.

9- Political History of the Two Iberias in comparative perspective

(ancient and medieval)

10- Historical Geography of the Two Iberias in comparative perspective

(ancient and medieval)

 

Working languages of the conference: English and Spanish.

 

Interested applicants are required to submit their CV and an abstract (300–600 words) no later than April 1, 2026 to the following email address: conference2iberias2@gmail.com 

 

The subject line of the email must indicate: “Two Iberias II.”

 

Notification of acceptance will be communicated by the end of April 2026.

 

The final conference programme will be published in June 2026.
