Sergi Kapanadze is an Invited Professor at the School of Governance of Caucasus University and a Jean Monnet Chair holder (2015-2017). He is also a Professor at Ilia State University and Editor-in-Chief of GEOpolitics.
He combines more than two decades of experience in academia, diplomacy, public service, and international policy-making. Throughout his career, he has served as Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, Vice Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia, Director of the Department of International Organizations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, advisor to the Administration of the President of Georgia, and analyst at the National Security Council of Georgia.
As a senior diplomat and negotiator, he served as Georgia’s Chief Negotiator in the Geneva International Discussions, Chief Negotiator on Russia’s accession to the World Trade Organization, and Deputy Chief Negotiator on the EU–Georgia Association Agreement. He represented Georgia in numerous high-level negotiations and international forums involving the United Nations, the OSCE, the Council of Europe, and the European Union.
Professor Kapanadze is a recognized expert on European integration, international security, conflict resolution, and foreign policy. Between 2015 and 2017, he served as a member of the OSCE Panel of Eminent Persons on European Security as a Common Project and contributed to major policy recommendations on the future of European security. He also participated in the OSCE task force developing status-neutral arms control mechanisms for conflict regions.
Since 2005, he has taught international relations, European integration, international organizations, negotiation theory and practice, conflict management, and peace studies. In addition to his appointments at Georgian universities, he has lectured and conducted research at several leading international institutions, including Central European University (CEU), ESPOL–Catholic University of Lille, the University of Glasgow, the Autonomous University of Barcelona, and Collegium Civitas.
His research focuses on European integration, democratization, Europeanization, Russian foreign policy, Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference (FIMI), security in the South Caucasus, EU enlargement, and conflict transformation. He is the author of numerous academic publications, policy papers, textbooks, and international commentaries published by institutions such as CEPA, ECFR, Euractiv, SCEEUS, LibMid and other leading policy platforms.
He holds a PhD in International Relations from Tbilisi State University and MA Degree in International Relations and European Studies from the Central European University. He holds the diplomatic rank of Envoy Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and was awarded Georgia’s Presidential Order of Excellence in 2011.
